Addiction Campuses Treatment Specialist to Meet Man from Viral Overdose Video for First Time

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (December 5, 2016) – On October 4, video depicting a couple overdosing on heroin on a Memphis sidewalk went viral on social media. It was covered on several media outlets in the MidSouth area, as well as nationally. A few days later, nationwide alcohol and substance abuse treatment center Addiction Campuses was able to locate and identify the male in the video as Ronald Hiers. Through the work of Treatment Specialist Michael Word and Hiers’ daughter, the organization was able to get Hiers to Turning Point, our campus located in Southaven, Miss. and scholarship him for treatment. Today, Word and Hiers will meet in person for the first time.

After over 40 years of addiction, Ronald has received two months of intensive inpatient therapy at the Turning Point campus, Hiers is now sharing his story of recovery nationally. We are happy to report that Hiers is doing well, has graduated, and is now transitioning into independent life again. Now that he has seen the other side of recovery, Hiers wishes to reach as many people as possible with his message of hope. Word will also be available to talk about the intense hours after the infamous Facebook LIVE video that shocked the world.

Carlia Hiers, Ronald’s wife, also depicted in the video, was located approximately 2 weeks after Ronald, and was also scholarshipped. Carla graduated from our Swift River campus in Cummington, Massachusetts Friday, and is now in a transitional living house at an undisclosed location. She does not wish to go on camera, but released the following statement and picture:

“Thank you to everyone who has prayed for my husband and I. I have not seen the video in its entirety, only what I’ve seen in media reports. It was a very scary time for me, and I wasn’t expecting anything like that to happen to us. That being said, it was a wakeup call. I am very optimistic about my recovery, and feel like God has reached down and pulled me out of a very dangerous situation. Since the video surfaced, I’ve learned that I can trust people, something I never did before. I feel I can make my own decisions, and I’m learning how to stay present in today – right now. I never thought anyone cared, and now I know there are people I can trust. To the viewers watching, it’s never too late to reach out for help. I don’t feel hopeless, worthless and useless anymore. I’m 60 years old, and I’ve been an opiate addict for 40 years. If there is hope for me, there is hope for everybody. I hope Ronald does well, and I wish him all the luck in the world.”

At this time, both Ronald and Carla are focused on their own recovery, and taking life one day at a time.
