TIME Partners with Mic Network, Inc. for Documentary Featuring Addiction Campuses
NEW YORK, New York (11/8/2017) – Time, has teamed up Mic for an exclusive look into the life and recovery of a couple addicted to heroin who overcame insurmountable odds and sought treatment at two separate Addiction Campuses facilities 1,264 miles apart in Life After Addiction.
The shoot follows the journey of Ron and Carla Hiers after a video of their overdose on a Memphis sidewalk went viral, sparking dialogue across the globe.
On October 4, 2016 the video went viral on social media, and was covered on several media outlets in the Mid-South area, as well as nationally. A few days later, nationwide alcohol and substance use disorder treatment provider, Addiction Campuses was able to locate and identify the male in the video as Ronald Hiers. Working with Hiers’ daughter, Paris, the organization was able to get him to Turning Point, a campus located in Southaven, Mississippi where he obtained a scholarship for treatment.
After over 40 years of addiction, Ronald received two months of intensive inpatient treatment at the Turning Point campus, and is now sharing his story nationally. We are happy to report that Hiers has graduated and now transitioned into independent life again. Now that he has seen the other side of recovery, Hiers wishes to reach as many people as possible with his message of hope.
Carlia Hiers, Ronald’s wife, also depicted in the viral video, was located approximately two weeks after Ronald, and was also able to obtain a full scholarship. Carla graduated from Addiction Campuses’ Swift River campus in Cummington, Massachusetts, and is now living privately at an undisclosed location.
“Thank you to everyone who has prayed for my husband and I,” says Hiers. “I have not seen the video in its entirety, only what I’ve seen in media reports. It was a very scary time for me, and I wasn’t expecting anything like that to happen to us. That being said, it was a wakeup call. I am very optimistic about my recovery and feel like God has reached down and pulled me out of a very dangerous situation.”
